Asparagus Fern
This foliage favorite adds easy-growing color in both sunny and shady spots. Use it to enhance floral container plantings with a ferny texture. Its rugged, drought-tolerant nature makes it an ideal choice for hanging baskets or full-sun containers that typically demand frequent watering. Plants are deer-resistant with thorny stems. In warmer regions, plants may overwinter. Will tolerate light frost. If a hard freeze nips stems, wait until early spring to trim stems back. Prune anytime to shape and keep plant height in check.
In colder regions, plant in spring when all danger of frost is past. In Zones 9 and warmer, plant year-round. In warmest regions where plants never die back from cold, asparagus fern can spread rapidly in the landscape and even be tough to curtail. In these areas, plant in pots or other containers to keep in check.
